  • Abstract: A bolted end-plate splice (BB splice) of L-shaped steel angles for encased composite column (PSRC column) is investigated. End plates are welded to the end of the spliced angles at a shop and are butted to each other with bolt tightening. Due to the bearing surface of end-plate, it is easy to connect column splice and the number of bolts can be reduced with a consideration of tensile resistance of bolts. The deformation and prying action need to be considered for a bolted end-plate splice, because the centroids of the angle and bolt sections do not coincide. Thus, the minimum thickness of end plate is proposed based on the yield line theory, and the tensile strength of the connection decreased by the prying force is estimated. The direct tension tests of bare angle splice and flexural tests of the encased composite column are performed to investigate the strength and failure mode of the connection. In addition, the stress distribution and force transfer mechanism are investigated through the finite element analysis. The proposed design method of bolted end-plate splice agrees well with the experimental and analytical results.

  • As the number of new projects continuously decreases in the domestic construction market, construction companies in South Korea frequently enter overseas projects. Under this situation, domestic structural engineers are required to be able to design buildings in compliance with international standards. Structural engineers in South Korea are generally accustomed to the 2016 Korean Building Code enacted based on US structural design standards (ACI318 and AISC 360). However, they are insufficiently experienced with the other structural standards, including Eurocode, and thereby have difficulties executing overseas construction projects designed in accordance with those standards. In attempts to maximize the characteristic advantages of steel structures and reinforced concrete structures while complementing their limitations, SENVEX CO., LTD. has developed various steel-concrete composite structures. Among the developed structures, the Thin Steelplate Composite (TSC) beam has been verified its performances with regard to resistances of load and fire through experimental research, and multiple patents have been registered thereon. Furthermore, this TSC beam has been applied to various construction projects. With its advantages mentioned above, TSC beam was recently proposed and applied for a large-scale warehouse construction project that was jointly ordered by the Jurong Town Corporation (JTC, Singapore’s urban development corporation). Given that Singapore has designated Eurocode  as its national structural design standards, SENVEX has established the TSC beam design method based on Eurocode. In this article, a design method of the TSC beam based on Eurocode was introduced, which had been established in an attempt to apply the TSC beam to Singapore. To begin with, a brief introduction to the TSC beam was presented along with its structural performance and fire-resistance performance verified by previous experimental researches. Also, major regulations concerning TSC beams from KBC 2016 and Eurocode were summarized. In designing TSC beams, KBC 2016 and Eurocode are similar in that a composite structure-based design is implemented but they differ in many aspects, for example, in terms of the strength reduction factors, the classification system of steel sections and composite sections, the equations for determining the limits of plate width-thickness ratio, and the equations for estimating the flexural strength of the composite section.

  • 국내 건설시장의 신규 프로젝트 물량이 지속적으로 줄어듦에 따라 건설업계의 해외 건설시장으로의 진출이 확대되고 있다. 이에 따라 국내 구조설계 기술자들에게 해외 구조기준을 활할 수 있는 능력이 요구되고 있다. 하지만 미국의 구조기준 (ACI 318, AISC 360)을 기반으로 제정된 국내 건축구조기준(이하 KBC 2016)에 익숙한 국내 구조기술자들은 유럽의 구조기준인 유로코드(Eurocode) 등 해외 구조기준에 대한 숙련도가 낮아 해외 건설 프로젝트 실무에 어려움을 겪고 있다. 한편 강구조 및 철근콘크리트 구조의 장점을 살리고 단점을 상호보완하기 위하여 다양한 강-콘크리트 합성구조를 개발하여 건설 프로젝트에 적용하고 있다. 이 중 TSC(Thin Steel-plate Composite) 합성보는 실험연구를 통하여 구조성능 및 내화성능을 검증하였고 다수의 특허를 등록하였다. 이를 기반으로 현재까지 다양한 건설 프로젝트에 적용되고 있다. 최근 싱가포르의 도시개발공사인 JTC(Jurong Town Corporation)가 공공발주한 대형 물류창고 프로젝트에 TSC 합성보 공법이 제안 및 채택되었다. 싱가포르는 국가 건축 구조설계 시 표준기준으로 유로코드를 채택하고 있어 TSC합성보의 구조설계를 위하여 유로코드에 따른 설계방법을 정립하게 되었다. 이에 본 기사에서는 유로코드에 의한 TSC 합성보의 설계방법을 다루었다. 먼저 TSC합성보의 소개 및 기존 실험연구에 의한 구조성능과 내화성능검증 결과를 제시하였고, TSC 합성보의 KBC 2016과 유로코드의 주요 규정을 정리하여 제시하였다. 두 기준을 이용한 TSC 합성보 구조설계의 큰 틀은 유사하였으나 강도감소계수, 강재단면 및 합성단면의 분류 체계 및 판폭두께비 계산식, 합성 단면의 휨강도 산정식 등에서 서로 다른 점을 확인하였다.

  • Abstract: Concentric and eccentric axial load tests on 2/3 scaled B-PSRC(Bolt-connected Prefabricated Steel Reinforced Concrete) and conventional SRC column specimens were performed. The experiment variables were the shape of vertical steel sections, the vertical spacing of transverse steel elements, the shape of transverse steel sections, the eccentric distance of axial load. Using concentric load test, The B-PSRC specimens showed similar degree of load-carrying capacity and deformation capacity compared to the conventional SRC specimens. Integrated section behaviors between concrete and steel angles were verified by eccentric load tests, showing well-fitted results with P-M interaction curves obtained from numerical section analysis.

  • Abstract: In this study, bond performance of prefabricated composite columns which are fabricated by bolt connection between steel angles and thin steel plates for lateral stiffening (B-PSRC composite column) was researched. To verify the bond performance, Flexural load tests were performed on 2/3 scaled B-PSRC specimens. From the test results, all the specimens showed flexural failure which is due to rupture of hole-section at the angle-bolt joints. Shear failure caused by bond slip between the angles and concrete was not found in any of specimens.
